When I was out walking last night, I saw someone I know driving an expensive looking car. It was teal blue, with a spoiler and an engine that roared through the twin exhausts, as the car flew past me.
Why do people drive cars like that?
Because it is a statement they want to make. For their peer group, it is a signal of status.
“Me and my mates drive cars like this”.
It’s not for you, but that’s fine, because this is what “we” do.
We might not live in a hunter-gatherer culture anymore, but we are still tribal people. There’s the in-group and out-group. Us versus Them. If you’re an insider, then we do things like this.
