Where is the line between looking after ourselves and being there for others?
I sometimes try and give of myself all the time to my loved ones. But after a while I come to the realisation that we can’t help everyone. We must allow others their pain, not try and take it from them. Yes, we can share the load, but if it only burdens others more it is not a load lightened, it is more people struggling.
We must offer our hands to those in need – not reach down and drag them up. Only when we offer our hands can others choose to reach out and pull themselves up too.
But self care is fundamental – it is not selfish to look after yourself. We must look after ourselves first and foremost.
Otherwise we burn out and that is not helpful to us or those struggling.
It’s something I am wrestling with at the moment because I feel I can be too selfish at times.
