“It’s in the mistakes that we learn”
This line came up in a conversation I had with a friend last week. It was about going into a school and helping out as a languages assistant. It was a fantastic experience working with young people studying for their A Levels and it was really moving to see how passionate they were about languages. There was a range of abilities in the class, but I think the best work was done with those who were a little less confident with their Spanish.
I’ve found that with languages, so much about learning is about making mistakes. We must see where we’re going wrong, acknowledge the mistakes and then, try something different the next time. It’s through this process of failing, listening, working and then learning that growth is achieved.
There are many good quotes about how failure moves us towards success, but I haven’t found many that put it as succinctly as this one by John C. Maxwell:
“Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward.”
How have you “Failed Forward” over the past week?
