Tik Tok epitomises attention stealing.
Its advertising campaign markets escapism. It encourages us to run from our work and escape into a world of endless scrolling and videos. There’s always another one to watch – something else people are doing to get attention.
A friend told me recently that they had to set a timer for themselves when they’d been using it. They got into the habit of snoozing their 1 hour Tik Tok alarm multiple times a day.
Is this healthy?
I’ve never used Tik Tok specifically, but it’s the way all social media is built.
The news has become the same – stealing our attention with sensationalised headlines, notifications and 24 hour “breaking” news.
How do we tell stories that have an impact and build trust, rather than aiming to steal attention?
