Breathe

Over the past few weeks, one of my friends has started a regular meditation practise. They keep telling me how much it’s been helping them during lockdown. They’re someone who has struggled with their mental health in the past.

I got into the habit of meditating a couple of years ago, but recently I’ve neglected the practise. After the recent conversations with my friend, I’ve decided to pursue it again.

One of the things that always surprises me in meditation is paying attention to my breathing. Breathing is the first thing we do when we’re born – it’s the gift of life.

It’s so easy to go about our days completely unaware of our breathing. When I’ve been stressing recently, I’ve been trying to centre myself by focusing on my heartbeat and breath. 

I am alive and that is a gift.

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of this important fact and pay attention to it.
