Listening Generously

Often in conversations, we can listen only with the intention of responding. We give the other person their airtime, but we may not actually be listening to what they’re saying. Rather, we’re actually thinking about and preparing our response.

When we do this, we can miss the richness and depth of the story that someone is trying to tell us. It may not be their specific words, but the way they say it, their body language, their narrative.

When we listen generously to others we can learn so much from what they say.

The next time you have a conversation with someone, can you listen generously to them?
