“Things Won’t Stop, They’ll Be Different”

I was talking with someone recently about how they think “lockdown” will end and the new normal will be established. They said the following phrase that struck me as quite profound:

“Things won’t stop, they’ll just be different

Lockdown was a radical short term solution in certain countries to stop the spread of COVID-19. Many things did stop for a time, but this is unsustainable in the long term. One only has to look at the shrinking of the economy to see the negative impact of this.

Sooner or later, the “new normal” will be established and we will slowly adapt to a new way of living and interacting with others. We need to be flexible and adaptable. The world is changing drastically and it has reminded us of how passing and temporary certain things are.

But we too can adapt and change. We will be different this time next year. We need to be aware of our own evolution and growth. We can choose to stop and this can be helpful in the short term; to reflect and take stock of where we are and where we want to go.

But soon we must crack on. We must take up our daily crosses and move forwards, making those small, daily choices to move us onwards and towards a brighter, safer future.

It’s the only way we can make things better.
