I was at IKEA the other day getting a few bits for my new uni home, when a middle-aged man made a “joke” to me.
“Oh, you’re letting the woman drive?” He said, laughing as he walked past me and my girlfriend, who just happened to be wheeling our trolley. He was pushing his own trolley and his wife smiled awkwardly as they walked off.
I don’t think he meant to cause offence, yet why do we think this way of speaking about women is acceptable?
It was almost as if he was making the joke “man to man”, but everyday sexism is no joke.
We all need to speak out against this masculine culture. Let’s be clear, someone’s gender doesn’t determine the quality of their driving.
When was the last time you witnessed everyday sexism?
