Back when fans were still allowed into football stadiums, I remember walking into Newcastle city centre whilst there was a match on at St. James’ Park. You could hear the roar of the atmosphere from streets away. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

Recently, a friend and I were discussing how certain things can make us very tribal. For me, one of them is sport, especially football. It can bring out my worst self and I don’t like it. I remember studying conformity during A Level Psychology and it got me thinking about how much we can be influenced by ‘the crowd’.

Football is not intrinsically bad, but the tribal mentality that is created when large groups of people come together can have negative consequences. We lose our individual identities in ‘the crowd’.

When was the last time you were caught up in an Us vs. Them mindset?
