As I’ve had quite a lot of uni work over my Christmas holidays, I’ve been struggling to find a balance between work, rest and quality time with my family.
One thing I’m finding useful is a strategy I used during my GCSE exam revision a number of years ago: 40 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
I’ve learnt that I can’t fully concentrate for extended periods of time and especially when studying languages, I’ve found it a lot more effective to do short and sweet periods of work. Sometimes it varies and I can go for longer if I’m in a good rhythm, but 40-45 mins of solid concentration on my work (with no phone distractions!) is a good yardstick for me.
It clearly varies from person to person because a friend of mine told me that they take a little longer to ‘warm-up’ and prefer to work for a couple of hours straight.
Personally, I find short, quick blasts better whether that’s for language learning, exercise, guitar practise or writing.
How do you work best?
